This cast-molded pressurized resin scale model of the Space Shuttle Discovery measures 11 inches long with a wingspan of 4-1/2 inches. It comes in 1/200 scale, is rendered in fine detail, and includes a wooden base. All parts of the replica are rendered to the scale of its real-life counterpart, adding to its authenticity. Recommended for Ages 14+ The vertically launching Space Shuttle was NASA's partially reusable low Earth orbital spacecraft. It included the Orbiter Vehicle, a pair of recoverable solid rocket boosters (SRBs), and an expendable external tank containing liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen. The official program name, Space Transportation System (STS) came from a proposed plan for a series of reusable spacecraft, of which the Space Shuttle was the only one produced. Four test flights were launched in 1981, with operational flights beginning in 1982. Discovery was the third operational Space Shuttle orbiter to be built and enter service. It launched its first mission in 1984 and embarked on its final mission in 2011. Over 27 years, it completed more spaceflights than any other spacecraft. Its most famous accomplishments were carrying the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) into orbit and helping to build the International Space Station (ISS).
