Recommended for ages 14+ The F-14 Tomcat has a variable-sweep wing that allows it to extend its length. This enables it to operate at a variety of speeds. It can also carry heavy munitions, including long-range air-to-air missiles, an RWR (radar warning receiving) system, and an IRST (infrared search and track) system. The iconic U.S. Navy aircraft was known for its dynamic skull-and-crossbones insignia. The "Jolly Rogers" VF84 fighting squadron flew the F-14 Tomcat in place of F-4N Phantoms. It played a major role in the Cold War. A symbol of naval aviation excellence, the Jolly Rogers flew the aircraft from the 1970s through the mid-1990s. The real-life aircraft measured 63 feet in length, a variable wingspan ranging from roughly 38 feet (swept) to 64 feet (unswept) and had a height of 16 ft. It could reach a maximum speed of 1,544 mph. It attained pop culture immortality when it was featured in the 1980 motion picture, "The Final Countdown."
